An American entrepreneur wants to raise funds to finance the development of Bitcoin. To do this, he created a new brand: Bitcoin Pizza.
Anthony Pompliano is a fairly well-known entrepreneur and influencer in the United States. He teamed up with start-up Popchew to create Bitcoin Pizza. Note that this young company specializes in the creation of food brands. The American entrepreneur will launch his initiative on May 22 in 10 American cities. The list includes major cities such as New York, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle and Houston. The launch of Bitcoin Pizza will take place without any major pizza chain. Pompliano favors independent local brands. From May 22, each of them is expected to offer pizza in boxes with the Bitcoin Pizza brand.
The choice of May 22 is no accident. Indeed, the date coincides with the eleventh anniversary of the first transaction with the most famous cryptocurrency. On May 22, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins to buy two pizzas.
That would amount to around $ 400 million today. Which makes them, retroactively, the most expensive pizzas in the world.
Only dollars to pay for a Bitcoin Pizza
Bitcoin Pizza may be the result of an initiative to finance the development of Bitcoin, but customers will not be able to use their bitcoins to buy pizza. This has earned the brand many reviews on social networks. Many do not understand the ban, especially since it is an initiative that aims to support cryptocurrency.
In fact, the purpose of the brand is not to get people to use their bitcoin for transactions. For its founder, the real goal is “to raise funds in the form of depreciated fiat currencies to help finance the development of bitcoin”.
Soon a permanent brand?
Profits from Bitcoin Pizza will go into the Human Rights Foundation’s (HRF) Bitcoin Development Fund program. The latter is an organization that has been actively working on the development of cryptocurrency for almost a year. On April 15, it received $ 316,303 in donations. Note that the HRF gives part of the donations to Bitcoin Core developers. The organization also funds internships for students who want to learn more about Bitcoin and for people who are developing cryptocurrency-related applications.
For now, the Bitcoin Pizza brand only exists for this pilot initiative, which is scheduled to end on May 29. Note that HRF is expected to receive between $ 10,000 to $ 20,000 as a result of the event. Should Pompliano’s mark become permanent, payments with bitcoins could be considered, which should put an end to the criticism.
